The theme of the 2009 Global Integration Summit (GIS) is Economic Payback through Integration and is targeted at the heart of the question that every potential attendee will be asking – “how can I justify attending a conference in these tough economic times?” The answer is twofold. First, the economic turbulence has created an opportunity for a conference at a cost level that is unheard of. Hotels are desperate for guests and travel costs are about as low as they can possible get with the result that the IC has arranged an amazing deal. Second, the theme of the summit is one that IT professionals can’t afford to miss in the current economy. The tough times are NOT going to be over in 2009 – we all need to learn how to deal with them and how to tighten our belts while still adding business value and handling rapid changes. In fact, the BEST time to start a new initiative may be during an economic downturn since it can present new opportunities.
The reality is that every large organization has many under-utilized assets – hardware, software, data, people, partners, facilities, inventory, etc. The trick is to break the gridlock that prevents organizations from maximizing the value of assets they already own. When times are good, under-utilized assets are less of a business imperative – but not now. The GIS will explore both the big transformational opportunities that can make breakthrough improvements on growth and operational efficiency, and on immediate quick-hit opportunities that can deliver results in 2009. In other words, how to pick the low-hanging fruit on the way to the juicy high-hanging fruit that offers huge paybacks but may require more sophisticated cross-organizational integration strategies.

| Defining the Value of Integration - Dave Linthicum PDF (573.64 KB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| Defining the Value of Integration - David Linthicum, Founder, David S. Linthicum, LLC - The central notion of integration is to create an enterprise that can effectively exchange information and behavior to drive core business processes. While integration is a known science, the business value of integration is something that most have not yet defined, but is critical to the success of any ongoing SOA or integration effort. Indeed, most will find that the value of integration is very high, as is the strategic ability for IT to align effectively with the business. In this keynote presentation we’ll understand the core concepts around integration, including how it meshes with SOA and enterprise architecture. Moreover, we’ll provide an approach to defining the value of integration, step-by-step. From the alignment with business, to the ongoing efficiencies that integration provides. |
| Case Study: Automated PowerCenter - Pat Kirkes PDF (497.33 KB) |

6/5/2009 |
| Case Study: Automated PowerCenter Development Using Mapping Architecture for Visio & Effecient use of ETL Environment - Patrick Kirkes, CENTENE - ETL activities are the most time-consuming, complex part of the end-to-end solution and drive the success of the overall project; a fast, efficient and pragmatic ETL architecture is crucial. Standardization of this process by designing and implementing ETL patterns guarantees consistency and easy maintenance at later stages; special attention should be paid to the following aspects: Design Automation: Automating parts of your ETL based on generic patterns is the easiest way to obtain consistency. Mapping Architect for Visio enabled this client to partially automate ETL development processes and produce 100% compliant mappings. Continuous advanced monitoring: After a while, infrastructure issues such as the batch window filling up and servers that are reaching maximum capacity begin to materialize. |
| An Inconvenient Change: LOE Model - Erikka Gleckel PDF (72.8 KB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| An Inconvenient Change: Transforming chaotic change into a manageable process with the Organizational Loss of Effectiveness (LOE) Model - Victoria Grady, PhD, Erikka A. Gleckel, Erin R. Grody, George Washington University - Organizations of the 21st Century are influenced by the technological environment, enhanced by the quality of group interactions, and subject to the continuous learning processes necessary for sustaining growth in the global marketplace. During this unique period of significant economic crisis, the value of integrating these qualities is critical to the opportunities awaiting the next generation of successful organization. The Organizational Loss of Effectiveness (LOE) Model originally proposed in 2005 can assist with “achieving a higher degree of maturity and application interoperability by enabling a more effective transition through the change management process.” |

| A Business Value Driven Approach - Richard Trapp PDF (4.13 MB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| A Business Value Driven Approach to Data Quality - Richard Trapp, Managing Partner. J Baron Group, LLC - Due to the macro-economic challenges facing businesses today, there is more scrutiny on the viability and success of operational investments now, than at any other time in contemporary business history. Consequently, businesses no longer have the luxury of supporting “non-value-driven” operations. Therefore, as data quality continues to mature as an emerging business discipline, data quality programs are being held to the same levels of accountability and rigor as other "main stream" business functions. To meet this challenge, today's data quality practitioner needs to be equipped with the proper business skills and perspective needed to compete for limited corporate walletshare. This presentation will focus on the importance of a formal benefits realization and business value-driven approach to data quality. |

| From Processes to Services: A Case Study-Sandeep Purao & Shawn Clark,Penn State University-This presentation describes the outcomes of a case study aimed at understanding decision making criteria used for prioritizing and implementing efforts to move internal processes to external services. For a business interested in leveraging the value embedded in internal processes, understanding and exploiting this linkage can be critical. The study was conducted at a small payroll company to explore the business and technology rationales behind the automation of select services. Enterprise process architecture mapping, coupled with structured interviews and content analysis were used. The results suggest that the rationale for process automation varies across technology, business and industry-oriented criteria with some interesting outcomes such as competitor’s strategies, high-touch services, and concerns about opening up market segments. |
| Managed Data Movement CoE -Don Heiser PDF (1.21 MB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| Case Study: Payback from a Managed Data Movement CoE -Don Heiser, PS Business Support Office, Wachovia Bank, A Wells Fargo Company-Enterprise data movement has largely been an uncharted area within large corporations. Industry trends show that the area of data movement is expanding beyond tactical applications into more of a strategic driver in many large organizations. These organizations are standardizing on fewer data movement vendors to leverage consistency of infrastructure, applications, economies of scale and to develop a larger skills base that is focused on fewer products. In many companies, there is no dedicated enterprise governing body to support a shift from tactical to a more strategic focus and to effectively manage the Managed Data Movement service space, leading to siloed, redundant infrastructures, highly complex data integration tools & portfolios with significant capital and maintenance expenditures. |
| Cloud Integration is here! - Ron Papas PDF (2.12 MB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| Cloud Integration is here! – Are You Ready to Benefit?-Ron Papas, Senior VP & General Manager On Demand, Informatica- While the economic crisis was triggered by the bursting real-estate bubble, it has also opened the floodgates of another trend which has been steadily building for a number of years – cloud computing. The technology for cloud computing, including Software as a Service (SaaS) and Application Platform as a Service (APaaS), has been around for a number of years and is now quite mature. The reason it is growing exponentially now in the economic turmoil is for business reasons. The model of “pay as you go” is more attractive now than ever and promises to fuel the cloud computing industry like never before. |
| Simplifying Development- William Ramirez PDF (1.02 MB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| Case Study: Simplifying Development with Informatica PowerCenter-William M. Ramirez Ramos, Analyst, Axtel- A great deal of “innovation failure” can be attributed to ineffective implementation rather than failure of the innovation itself. Consolidating data from different source systems is not easy since it involves handling more data, in more formats, from more partners, and more systems than ever before. Tools such as Informatica PowerCenter can help organizations implement innovation successfully. This paper presents a case study of failed innovation implementation, and highlights in particular the role of simplifying development by using an integration platform to prevent such failure in future cases using other solutions. The results reinforce the importance of addressing change factors such as training, demonstrating trust, and management support during the implementation process. |

| EA & SOA: Allies or Opponents? -Jason Bloomberg PDF (615.5 KB) |
|
6/5/2009 |
| EA & SOA: Allies or Opponents? -Jason Bloomberg, Zapthink - EA and SOA: Allies or Opponents? Many architects are increasingly coming to the realization that Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an approach to, or style of EA. Furthermore, as SOA best practices gradually become mainstream, they are merging with more traditional EA best practices into a generally Service-oriented approach to EA. At least, that's what some people think. Ask senior Enterprise Architects with 20 years of experience under their belts, however, and they may disagree vehemently. What is it about SOA that threatens the "traditional" practice of EA? Why are some EAs so dead set against adopting SOA broadly as Enterprise Architecture? And most importantly, how do you get your EAs on board with your SOA efforts, both to increase success of SOA as well as to make EA more effective? |
